Why More Travellers Are Paying a Bit Extra to Skip the Airport Stress

Archibald HarveyBy Archibald HarveyJuly 30, 2026No Comments4 Mins Read

There’s a particular kind of misery that comes with airport parking. You’ve budgeted your travel time, left the house feeling relatively calm, and then spent 25 minutes crawling around a multi-storey looking for a space, dragging a suitcase across uneven tarmac, and making it to the terminal with your stress levels already through the roof before you’ve even touched a departure board. It’s a rubbish start to any trip.

More people are catching on to the fact that parking doesn’t have to work like that. Not because they’re flash with money, but because the cost of a slightly more straightforward arrival is often genuinely reasonable when you actually sit down and look at it. A few pounds extra, weighed against arriving at the terminal already in a foul mood, starts to look like pretty decent value.

What the “VIP” label actually means in practice

The word VIP gets thrown around airports a lot, and honestly, most of the time it means very little. A slightly nicer waiting area with the same machine coffee. What tends to separate the good options from the marketing fluff is whether the service actually saves you measurable time and effort, not just the promise of it.

At Liverpool John Lennon Airport, the premium fast track parking option is a good example of how this can work without requiring you to have a business class budget. You pull in close to the terminal, hand your keys to staff who take care of the car, and walk into departures. That’s more or less it. There’s no shuttle, no trailing luggage across half a mile of tarmac in the drizzle, no app-based scavenger hunt for your bay number. For anyone travelling with young kids, elderly relatives, or just an unreasonable amount of luggage (no judgement), that difference is pretty significant.

It’s also worth saying that Liverpool’s airport is genuinely compact compared to something like Manchester or Gatwick, which actually works in the premium parking’s favour. You’re not talking about a huge, sprawling valet operation. The terminal is right there, and that proximity makes the whole thing feel rather more civilised than you might expect.

Who actually uses this kind of thing

There’s a lazy assumption that valet-style airport parking is strictly for people in suits flying to Zurich on expenses. The reality is a lot more mixed. Families who’ve already endured a two-hour car journey with fractious children. People with mobility issues who’d rather not do a long walk through a car park. Solo travellers who’ve cut it a bit fine on time and don’t want to compound the situation. Business travellers, yes, but not exclusively.

The maths of it

This is where people often talk themselves out of it before they’ve even looked at prices. The assumption is that anything with “premium” in the name will be eye-wateringly expensive, but that’s not always the case, particularly if you book in advance. Prices shift depending on when you book and how long you’re away, but it’s rarely the dramatic leap people imagine.

Compare it to what you might spend on a decent meal out, or how much time you’d waste in a standard car park, and the calculation shifts a bit. Not everyone will feel it’s worth it, and that’s fair enough. But going in assuming it’s out of reach without checking is probably leaving a reasonable option off the table unnecessarily.

Getting it right from the start

There’s something to be said for the tone that airport parking sets for a trip. Arrive flustered and rushed, and you’re carrying that into the departure lounge, into the queue for security, into the whole first few hours of what’s supposed to be a break or a productive work trip. It sounds a bit precious maybe, but the beginning of a journey has a way of colouring the rest of it. If spending a bit more on parking means you’re actually in decent shape by the time you reach the gate, it’s probably money better spent than another airport sandwich you didn’t really want.
